Program Description
Some of Madrid's best stories are discovered not in museums, but at the bar counter. In taverns that have welcomed generations of locals, restaurants with surprising pasts and places where small plates of tapas turn an ordinary meal into a social ritual. On this food tour of Madrid, you'll discover exactly these kinds of places. You'll sample regional specialities, experience the Spanish tradition of tapeo and explore the streets of the capital's historic centre between tastings.
Your experience begins in a historic Madrid tavern, where you'll enjoy your first tapas accompanied by a glass of traditional vermouth. Your local guide will introduce you to the world of tapeo - the custom of moving from bar to bar, ordering small dishes and enjoying good food in great company. In Madrid, each stop offers a chance to discover a new flavour, story or local tradition.
And how about a restaurant that once housed horses? Your next stop will be a former stable transformed into a family-run restaurant specialising in Asturian cuisine. You'll discover the culinary traditions of northern Spain, taste regional tapas and learn about the distinctive way of pouring Asturian cider. The bottle is held high above the glass, allowing the cider to flow down in a steady stream. You'll also have the opportunity to try this traditional technique yourself.
But Madrid has far more stories to tell than those found on restaurant menus. During an approximately 35-minute guided walking tour, you'll explore the area around the Royal Palace of Madrid and the historic Habsburg Quarter. As you wander through centuries-old streets, you'll hear stories of the city's royal past and discover how many of its traditions have survived to this day.
More flavours await at a local neighbourhood bar, where you'll sample further tapas and a wine-based cocktail. Your route will also take you to Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol - two squares that have played an important role in Madrid's life for centuries. Your guide will explain their history and cultural significance, weaving together stories of the city and its residents' culinary customs.
For the final stop, you'll visit a place where time seems to move at its own pace - a family-run bar with over a century of history. Here, you'll enjoy more traditional tapas, including gambas al ajillo, prawns cooked with garlic. It's one of those Spanish specialities that proves how a few simple ingredients can create a truly distinctive flavour.
What makes this tour special is everything you discover between tastings: stories of old taverns, local customs and establishments that have preserved their character over the years. You'll experience Madrid through all your senses - from the flavours of regional dishes and the lively atmosphere of its bars to the stories hidden in its historic streets. And once you've discovered the art of tapeo, exploring Madrid's bars might just become your new favourite tradition.
