Program Description

Set off early in the morning from your hotel to Alexandria, a historic city founded by Alexander the Great. During the tour, discover some of the city's most important landmarks and places connected with its rich history.

The first stop is the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, discovered in Egypt in 1900. The name means “Mound of Shards” and refers to the broken vessels that were once left near the tombs after funeral feasts.

Next, visit Pompey's Pillar, a distinctive monument made of pink granite. It was erected around 300 AD in honour of Emperor Diocletian and is one of Alexandria's most recognisable landmarks.

The next stop is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, an impressive cultural complex inspired by the legacy of the ancient Library of Alexandria. During the approximately one-hour visit, there will be time to explore the site and learn about its history.

The tour then continues with an outside view of Qaitbay Citadel. This 15th-century fortress was built on the site of the former Lighthouse of Alexandria. During the approximately 30-minute stop, you will also have free time to explore the surrounding area and enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea.

The programme also includes lunch, followed by the return journey to your hotel.

Please note: Children under 4 years old are not permitted to enter the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The order of sightseeing and the programme may be subject to change.

The tour has its pros and cons. Poor organization of the tour time; there`s little time to explore the interesting places. The guide didn`t mention that the Alexandria Library houses an archaeological museum (worth adding to the program).
