Program Description
Two medieval towns, two imposing castles and landscapes that could hardly be more different. One towers above mountain valleys, while the other rises from a rocky headland surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. On this trip from Valencia to Morella and Peñíscola, you'll discover places where history lives on in ancient stone walls, narrow streets and monumental fortifications. Stories of medieval rulers, the Knights Templar and Pope Luna await, alongside filming locations from the famous TV series Game of Thrones.
After approximately two hours of travelling from Valencia, you'll arrive in Morella, one of Spain's most picturesquely situated medieval towns. Surrounded by defensive walls, the town rises on a rocky hill, with an imposing castle dominating its skyline. During a guided tour, you'll stroll through the historic centre and discover the town's fascinating past, shaped over the centuries by its strategic location.
One of the main highlights will be Morella Castle, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You'll also visit the Basilica of Santa María, renowned for its Gothic architecture, and the historic cloister, reflecting the town's religious heritage. Wandering through Morella offers a chance to admire its medieval buildings and discover corners that have retained their historic character.
After exploring the town, it's time for a traditional lunch and a chance to relax. You'll also have free time to wander independently through the cobbled streets, admire the architecture or discover more of this mountain town at your own pace.
Next, you'll head towards the coast to visit Peñíscola, known as the "city in the sea". Its walled old town occupies a rocky headland jutting out into the Mediterranean. Rising above the whitewashed buildings is the Templar Castle, closely associated with Benedict XIII, also known as Pope Luna. This remarkable combination of medieval architecture and a dramatic coastal setting has also made Peñíscola a filming location for productions including Game of Thrones.
As you explore the historic centre, you'll also see Casa de las Conchas, or the House of Shells, known for its distinctive shell-covered façade. Another fascinating feature is El Bufador - a natural opening in the rocks through which the force of the waves drives air and seawater. It's a striking example of the power of nature along Peñíscola's coastline.
Morella and Peñíscola reveal two contrasting sides of medieval Spain - a mountain fortress surrounded by valleys and a coastal town crowned by a Templar castle. After a day of historical discoveries and scenic views, you'll return to Valencia with memories of two remarkable destinations.
